It is important to understand the complex ways teen parents are both a product of, and contribute to, their personal systems. An awareness and acceptance of the teen parent’s complex system can assist library staff in planning and implementing programs and in developing an understanding of how the system impacts the teen parent’s actions and attitudes.
The varying perspectives and opinions may not be shared by all group members, contributing to the nature of how the group functions together. Other factors that influence group dynamics include how familiar members are with one another, how much or how little trust exists between members, communication skills, whether group members feel comfortable and safe, and how open minded the group members are to differences (Rees 1998). Especially among adolescents, where cliques often exist within groups, it is critical to establish and review those community agreements, or ground rules, at the beginning in order to maintain a respectful learning environment.
Young families may live in neighborhoods plagued by high rates of poverty, low literacy skills, community violence, and a deficit in nutritional knowledge and practices. Gang activity and experiences with neighborhood crime, either as a victim or a witness, negatively affect the social and emotional development of the teen and her baby. If the teen parent feels unsafe to walk to and from school, for example, or lives in constant fear of gang violence, the associated stress and anxiety create an adverse environment for the family.
